The will of James Johnston was dated 10 November 1808. Beloved wife. My four children namely Matilda, Bruken, Pitman and Mourning. Daughter Matilda Games. Pitman and Mourning to be executors. Signed James his + mark Johnson. Witnesses: Thomas Gatewood, William his x mark Coleman, Edmund Ferrill, Othniel Davis. Proved 17 December 1810. On 18 March 1811, Mourning Johnston and Ephraim Beazley were bound in the penalty of £2,000 for Mourning Johnston’s administration of the goods, chattels and credits of James Johnston, deceased. [Essex County, Virginia, Will Book 17, page 272.]

On 19 April 1811, an inventory and appraisal of the estate of James Johnson deceased was made by Ewen Clements, William Coleman, Thomas Harper, and Mourning Johnston, and was ordered recorded on 19 August 1811. [Essex County, Virginia, Will Book 17, pages 303–304.]
