Brooking was mentioned (as Bruken) in the 10 November 1808 will of his father, James Johnston, proved 17 December 1810. [Essex County, Virginia, Will Book 17, pages 253–254.]
On 16 October 1815, Mourning Johnston and William Coleman were bound in the penalty of $800 for Mourning Johnston’s administration of the goods, chattels and credits of Brooking Johnston, deceased. (The name originally written Johnson, but Mourning signed Johnston.) [Essex County, Virginia, Will Book 18, pages 219–220.]
