Obed Gray was mentioned in the 1 February 1815 will of Isaac Dishman, proved 17 April 1815. He was named co-executor with John Dishman. [Essex County, Virginia, Will Book 18, page 150.]
The will of Obed Gray was dated 3 June 1830. To friends James and Joseph Taylor my cart and steers and plough horse. I lend to Aunt Jane Dishman the balance of estate real and personal. After her death, to my brother John Gray half of land and personal estate. I leave in trust to my friend William Gravatt for the benefit, support and maintenance of my sister, Sarah Dishman, and her children the other half of my land and personal estate, clear of any control of her husband, and at her death to her children. At the death of my Aunt Jane Dishman, my negro man Ben shall have the choice of continuing a slave or quitting the state and becoming a free man. Friend William Gravatt to be executor. On 16 August 1830, William Gravatt and Thomas H. Pitts were bound in the penalty of $1,200 for William Gravatt’s execution of the estate of Obed Gray, deceased. [Essex County, Virginia, Will Book 22, page 148.]
