The estate of Peter Broocke in account with Jones C Clopton, administrator, for 1832 was ordered recorded on 21 January 1833. Includes on 1 December 1832 payment to “Geo W Shelton Overseer Poor for 2 years house for Lucy Flitcher”. [Essex County, Virginia, Will Book 23, pages 42–44.]

Jones C. Clopton was mentioned in the 22 April 1833 will of his father-in-law, Archibald Ritchie, proved 17 March 1834, and was named an executor. “4thly On the death or marriage of my beloved wife Martha H I hereby direct my Executors hereinafter named to divide the property heretofore loaned to my wife during her life or widowhood and to my son in law Jones C Clopton during the life or widowhood of my beloved wife Martha H. into two equal parts — one of which equal part I give to my daughter Janet R Rouzee and her heirs forever; the other equal part I give to my daughter Mary Juliet Clopton and her heirs forever … 6th and lastly — I do hereby appoint my two friends & sons in law Richard Rowzee and Jones C Clopton to be executors of this my last Will and Testament”. On 17 March 1834, presented in court; William A Wright and George Wright say they were well acquainted with the handwriting of Archibald Ritchie. On 21 April 1834, a certificate granted Jones C Clopton and Richard Rowzee in order to their obtaining probate.

On 21 April 1834, Jones C Clopton, Richard Rowzee, John Rowzee and William Oliver were bound in the penalty of $10,000 for Jones C Clopton’s and Richard Rowzee’s execution of the will of Archibald Ritchie. [Essex County, Virginia, Will Book 23, page 250.]

On 20 October 1834, Jones C Clopton and William Oliver were bound in the penalty of $400 for Jones C Clopton’s administration of the estate of William Owen, deceased. [Essex County, Virginia, Will Book 23, page 292.]

On 26 July 1836, J C Clopton witnessed the will of John Boughton, and proved the will in court on 15 August 1836. [Essex County, Virginia, Will Book 24, pages 60–61.]

On 15 August 1836, Reuben B Boughton, Jones C Clopton and George T F Larmier were bound in the penalty of $8,000 for Reuben B Boughton’s executorship of the estate of John Boughton, deceased. [Essex County, Virginia, Will Book 24, page 61.]

On 19 September 1836, Barbara Gatewood, Jones C Clopton, Richard J Muse, Edwd M Ware, Wm L Gatewood, George Wright and Oscar M Crutchfield were bound in the penalty of $38,000 for Barbara Gatewood’s adminsitration with the will annexed of the estate Kemp Gatewood, deceased. [Essex County, Virginia, Will Book 24, page 67.]

On 15 January 1838, Richard Motley, as administrator of the estate of William Fisher, deceased, sold Negroes belonging to the estate. To William P. Taylor: Boy Philip, Girl Rachel, Frances and child about 8 mos. old; to Robert H. Harrison: Dennis; to George Wright: Sam Kellis; to James C. Clopton: Daniel; to Achilles Lumpkin: Martha; to Mr. Malichote [?]: Eliza. Total valuation $5,326.00. [Essex County, Virginia, Will Book 24, page 276.]
