Joseph Davis married Lucile Davis on 8 August 1919 in Gloucester County, Virginia. He was 46, widowed; she was 48, widowed. Both were born in Essex County and resided there. Parents were Samuel Davis and Francis C. Dunn, and S. G. P. Muse and Sarah J. Coates. Joseph was a mechanic. R. A. Folkes performed the ceremony. On 12 February 1940, Lucila A. Davis died in Upright P.O., Essex County, Virginia. She was female; white; married; husband was Joseph Davis; age 74 years; occupation housekeeper; born in Upright, Essex County, Virginia; father was Samuel Wm. Muse, who was born in Essex County, Virginia; mother was Sarah J. Coates, who was born in King and Queen County, Virginia; informant was P. E. Muse of [illegible] Virginia; burial at Levanon [sic] Church on 14 February 1940; attended from 5 May 1939 to 11 February 1940; “died Feb 12th at 12 o’clock midnight”; cause of death arteriosclerotic cardio-vascular disease (duration unknown), congestive heart failure (4 days); contributing cause chronic pulmonary tuberculosis (duration unknown). [Commonwealth of Virginia, Certificate of Death 4427.]

The will of Lucelia Muse Davis was dated 1932, but although was signed by two witnesses was not signed by the decedant. To husband Joseph Davis, 310 acres he now farms, “Moss Hill”, plus horse, buggy, and harness. $100 to brother P. E. Muse for burial lot. Other bequests to siblings. P. E. Muse executor. The will was not signed by the decedant, but was signed by two witnesses: Julia Billups, Mollie Durham. Although she technically died intestate, the court decided to accept the will. Heirs included: C. H. Muse, 79, brother, of Richmond; P. E. Muse, 68, brother, of Ordinary; Sally Y. Taylor, 64, sister, of Upright; Countess Bareford, 48, neice, of Ozeana; and many other neices and nephews. Joseph Davis's name does not appear on the list of heirs. Recorded 1 March 1940. She is buried with her mother and Robert S. Davis.
