Pearl Kopp, 27 October 1991:
Yes, I knew her, but she was a cripple. From the time I remember her, she had two crutches. I can see her walking with those two crutches now. And she, “You don’t behave yourself, you’re gonna get one right over your head!” [laughs] She was right old when I was, you know, I was just so … 8 years old I guess. 7 or 6… I knew she was right old because she used crutches, you know, two crutches.
TM: Was she always like that?
PK: I really don’t know. By the time I remember her she used crutches.
TM: Did she actually ever hit anybody?
PK: I don’t know.
TM: Was she sort of a mean person?
PK: No.
TM: I thought you said she threatened to hit you with her cane.
PK: Oh, she wasn’t. She was just foolin’ with you. People would see her do it, and think that she really meant it.

PK, 6 November 1991: “I remember my grandmother, because she walked with two crutches, I remember that. She used to say to me, ‘You want me to hit you over the head with this?!’ I said, ‘No, because that would hurt!’”

6 November 1991, Pearl Irene Davis Kopp and Thomas Darian Moore:
TM: But your father’s mother, your grandmother Fanny, was she living by herself when you were little?
PK: No, she never lived by herself. She always lived with my aunt. With her daughter. Aunt Celie or aunt Cora, one or the other she’d live with. She died while she was with them. She had a home I guess before that, but nothing from the time I knew her.
TM: Well, maybe that was her old home. When did she die, do you remember?
PK: When? Oh, I was about 14.
TM: About 1916 or so, that would have been.
PK: I imagine. I think I was around 14 when she died, because I know I wasn’t… [trails off]. I was going out with the boys [laughs]. And I wasn’t allowed to go out until I was about 14, so I think…
