Essex County Birth Records give his birth date as 1889. Cora Lee Boughan provides a different birth date: April 5, 1888. Hers may be more accurrate; the Essex County listing simply says April 1889 with no exact date. Essex County birth records before p. 68. Birth and death dates of 1888 and 1975, respectively, on his tombstone. He is buried with his wife.

Jos. E. Baughan married Letha L. Shearwood on 26 June 1912 in Essex County, Virginia. Both were 24, single (not widowed), born in Essex and residing there. Parents were Thos. W. Boughan and Mary E. Taylor, and Jno. R. Shearwood and Mollie Brizendine. Joseph was a farmer. G. Y. Bradley performed the ceremony. [Essex County, Virginia, Marriage Book 1, page 188, line 27]

On 5 June 1917, Joseph E. Boughan completed a draft registration card giving his name as Joseph E. Boughan, residing at Howertons, Va., born 5 April 1888, natural born citizen, born at Millers Tavern, Va., U.S.A., occupation farmer, has a wife dependent on him, married, caucasian, claims exemption “Yes, To support wife”, height tall, medium build, blue eyes, brown hair, disability: slightly lame from Typhoid fever, signed Joseph E. On 4 January 1946, Joseph E. Boughan of Howerton was listed as an heir to his deceased brother C. R. Boughan. [Essex County, Virginia, Wills Fiduciary Accounts, Etc., 8, p. 29.]

Mr. and Mrs. Joseph E. Boughan held a golden wedding anniversary event on 24 June 1962 at their home in Howertons, Virginia.

Pearl Irene Davis Kopp said on 28 September 1991 that Joseph and Letha had six children.
