On 16 July 1889, The Baltimore Sun reported in a legal column:
DECISION OF A JUSTICE REVERSED.
In the City Court Judge Steward filed an opinion in the appeal case of Frederick Ehrman against Dwight E. Lyman and Cumberland Duncan, trustees of George Presstman, deceased. The case involved four appeals from the decision of a justice of the peace, and in all of them the decision of the justice was reversed and judgment give in favor of the trustees. The facts int he case are that Mr. Presstman had leased to Mr. Ehrman a lot of ground on Caroline street, opposite the City dock, for a coal yard. The lease was for ten years from August 1, 1875, at $300 yearly, payable quarterly. After the lease had expired Mr. Ehrman continued in possession, paying rent for two years and three months thereafter. On November 1, 1888, one year's rent was due, for which the trustees distrained on the 11th of last January. Among the property taken were carts belonging to Isador Stoessel, Engel, Kichheimer & Regnier and Charles Strahlein, Jr. But one of these had obtained permission for his carts to remain on the lot, but all are held to be equally liable. Judge Stewart says there can no doubt as to the liability of Mr. Ehrman, and in regard to the others he says the goods of a stranger are liable with those of a tenant, and orders the return of the property in all the cases.
