On 21 September 1795, John Minter and Barker Minter were bound £200 for Josiah Minter’s administration of the goods, chattles and credits of Rice Fawcett. Signed John Minter, Barker Minter. [Essex County, Virginia, Will Book 15, pages 157–158.]

On 15 October 1795, an inventory and appraisal of the estate of a Rice Fawcett was given by James Wright, William Sphepherd[?] and James Allen. No total. Signed by John Minter. Ordered recorded 17 October 1796. [Essex County, Virginia, Will Book 15, pages 263–264.]

The estate of Rice Fawcett in account with John Minter for 1796 was settled on 10 October 1796 by Thos Dix, Jno Haile and Jas Wright. Ordered recorded on 17 October 1796. [Essex County, Virginia, Will Book 15, pages 264–265.]

On 16 July 1804, Barker Minter and John Minter were bound for the marriage of Barker Minter, widower, and Sally Croxton, widower. Witnesses: John Haile junr, Robt G. Haile. [Virginia State Library, Research and Information Services Division, Essex County Marriage Bonds, Box 1, 1804–11.]

On 15 May 1809, an appraisal of the estate of Carter Wood was recorded, made by John Minter, James Allen and Lewis Dix. [Essex County, Virginia, Will Book 17, pages 123–125.]

On 16 August 1810, John Minter, aged about 61 or 62 years old, gave an affidavit at Millers Tavern. [Essex County, Virginia, Box Chancery No. 22, item 22-H-36.]

On 17 March 1817, John Minter, Henry H. Boughan and Richard Shearwood were bound in the penalty of £4,000 for John Minter’s administration of the goods, chattles and credits of Barker Minter. [Essex County, Virginia, Will Book 18, page 366.]

On 18 March 1817, an inventory and appraisal of the estate of Thomas Purkins by Carter Croxton, H. H. Boughan and John Minter was returned to court and ordered recorded. Total valuation $61.48. [Essex County, Virginia, Will Book 18, page 373.]

The estate of Barker Minter, deceased, in account with John Minter, executor, from 1817 to 1821 was settled on 25 February 1821 by H W Latané, Thos. L. Latané, and Henry H Boughan. [Essex County, Virginia, Will Book 19, pages 183–184.]

On 21 February 1826, a complaint was filed in the Chancery Court of Essex County by orators & oratrices John Minter & Ann his wife, Robt Mann & Susan his wife, Peter Campbell & Mary his wife, Fontaine Wood, and Ambrose, John, Thomas & Sarah Hunley infants under the age of twenty one years by Elizabeth Hundley their Guardian and next friend, & Josiah Ryland, stating that in 1825 Richard Ryland had died intestate leaving no children and petitioning for the division of his estate. Numerous amendments and affidavits were filed during the course of the case. Papers filed state that Richard left heirs Peter Campbell and Mary R. his wife who was Mary Hundley, Ambrose Hundley, Robert Mann (who died between the decree on 19 February 1827 and the division of the estate on 14 June 1827) and Susan D. his wife who was Susan Hundley, Mary and Thomas Wood, children of Fontaine Wood and Anne H. his wife, deceased, who was Anne H. Hundley, Richard Hundley, John Hundley, Thomas Hundley, and Sarah Hundley, the said Mary, Ambrose, Susan, Anne, Richard, John, Thomas and Sarah being children of Ambrose Hundley deceased, Richard Hundley (who lived in Kershaw District, South Carolina) and Absalom Hundley (long removed from Virginia), the said Ambrose, Richard and Absalom children of Ambrose Hundley and Mary his wife who was Mary Ryland, a sister of the full blood to Richard Ryland [although family Bible records indicate otherwise] and who married after the death of Ambrose a James Ferguson and moved to Kershaw District, South Carolina; Mary “Polly” Shelor (or Shetor, the name appearing both ways), Thomas Shelor, Joseph Shelor and Sally Gee who was Sally Shelor, the said Mary, Thomas, Joseph, and Sally being children of Elizabeth Shelor deceased who was married to Jacob Shelor, Thomas Ryland, John Ryland, Hundley Ryland, John Simmons and Nancy his wife who was Nancy Ryland, the said Thomas, John, and Hundley Ryland and Nancy Simmons and Elizabeth Shelor being children of Thomas Ryland deceased, a brother of the half blood to Richard Ryland; Thomas Jones who died without heir, Robert Jeffries and Elizabeth his wife who was Elizabeth Jones and who had previously married James McFarlane, Richard D. Dunn and Peggy his wife who was Peggy Jones, James Durham and Nancy his wife who was Nancy Jones, Patsy Jones and Betsy Jones, children of Joseph Jones deceased, Mary Thompson who was Mary Jones, Sophronia Jones a daughter of Richard Jones deceased, Benjamin Jones, and Coleman Jones and Susan his wife, the said Thomas, Elizabeth, Peggy, Sally, Nancy, Joseph, Mary, Richard, Benjamin and Susan being children of Elizabeth Jones deceased, a sister of the whole blood to Richard Ryland who had married Richard Jones; John Minter and Ann his wife who was Ann Ryland, a sister of the whole blood to Richard Ryland; Lewis Mickleburrough and Henrietta his wife who was Henrietta Haile, Joseph McTyre and Polly his wife who was Polly Haile, Joseph Haile and Jonathan Haile, the said Henrietta, Polly, Joseph and Jonathan being children of Mary Haile, deceased, wife of Wheeler Haile and who was Mary Croxton, a daughter of Thomas Croxton and Sarah his wife who was Sarah Ryland, a sister of the whole blood to Richard Ryland (the said Thomas and Sarah also having had children Joseph, Thomas, Richard, and Susan (who married a Miller) who have been long removed from Virginia); Lewis Whittemore and Jane his wife who was Jane Ryland and Wyatt Whittemore and Nancy his wife who was Nancy Ryland, the said Jane and Nancy being children of John Ryland a brother of the whole blood to Richard Ryland; George and Samuel Durham, children of Mary Durham deceased who was Mary Faucett, a daughter of Rice Faucett and Susannah his wife who was Susannah Ryland, a sister of the whole blood to Richard Ryland; Edward, Allen, Joseph, Samuel, Elizabeth and Polly Ryland and Joseph Tellman (also Tillman) and Sally his wife who was Sally Ryland, the said Edward, Allen, Joseph, Samuel, Elizabeth, Polly and Sally being children of Iverson Ryland deceased, a brother of the whole blood to Richard Ryland; Josiah Ryland, a brother of the half blood to Richard Ryland who is still living; Parker Tod Hunter and Catharine his wife who was Catharine Ryland, Joseph Barnett and Elizabeth his wife who was Elizabeth Ryland, John, James, Edwin and Joanna Ryland, the said Catharine, Elizabeth, John, James, Edwin and Joanna being children of Joseph Ryland who died in Kentucky, a brother of the half blood to Richard Ryland; and Jacob Tod Hunter and Joanna his wife who was Joanna Ryland, a sister of the half blood to Richard Ryland. On 18 July 1825, John Minter and Josiah Minter were bound in the penalty of $600 for John Minter’s administration of the goods, chattels and credits of Richard Ryland. [Essex County, Virginia, Will Book 20, page 195.]

In the name of God amen! I John Minter of the County of Essex and State of Virginia do make this my last will and testament in manner and form following, viz: I lend to my beloved Wife Ann Minter during her life the whole of my estate both real and personal to be used and enjoyed by her agreeably to her discretion. After the death of my wife the whole of my estate both real and personal that may be left after the payment of my just debts I give and bequeath to James Durham junr. who now lives with me to him and his heirs forever. Lastly I hereby constitute and appoint the said James Durham junr. executor of this my last will and testament hereby revoking all wills heretofore made by me. In Testimony whereof I have hereunto set my hand and seal this 29th day of April 1833. Signed John Minter. Witnesses: Richard Harper, Chaney his x mark Broach, William his x mark Brooks. On 20 April 1840, presented in court by James Durham and proved by Richard Harper, “and the proof of said Writing being contested by Richard Shearwood a great Nephew of the Testator, Jane Isabella Broach and Joanna Broach children of Frances Broach who was Frances Fletcher a Niece of the Testator by Chaney Broach their Guardian and next friend by consent of the parties, the proof of the said writing was continued till the next Court.” “At a Court of Quarterly session begun and held for Essex County at the Courthouse in Tappahannock on the 18th Day of May 1840. This Writing purporting to be the last Will and Testament of John Minter decd. being again brough into Court and offered for proof by James Durham Jr. and the proof of said writing being contested by Richard Shearwood and others. On the motion of the said James Durham Jr. the proof of the said writing was continued till the next court; and on the further motion of the said Durham it was ordered that Chaney Broach be summoned to appear here on the first day of the next Court…” At court of 15 June 1840, “This Writing purporting to be the last Will and Testament of John Minter decd being again brought into Court and offered for proof by James Durham Jr. was further proved by the oath of Chaney Broach another subscribing Witness to the same and was Ordered to be Recorded—” [Essex County, Virginia, Will Book 24, pages 488–489.]

On 20 July 1840, James Durham Jr., William A. Wright and Robert G. Haile were bound in the penalty of $12,000 for James Durham Jr.’s executorship of the estate of John Minter, deceased. [Essex County, Virginia, Will Book 24, pages 489–490.]

On 4 August 1840, an inventory and appraisal of the estate of John Minter, deceased, was made by Was: H: Purkins, James Semple, and M: G: Wood. Includes 1 Man named Squire, 1 ditto Nelson, 1 ditto Lewis, 1 Lad Sam, Woman Violet & son George, ditto Anarcha & two children to wit Emily & Philip, 1 Boy William, 1 ditto John, Girl Jane, old Man Saunders, old Woman Judy, Rachel & three children named Edward, Jas. & Benjamin, and Old Woman Beck.
