Richard Carter is mentioned in the will of Phillip Parr of South Farnham Parish, dated 13 December 1699. Parr leaves to “my loving kinsman Richard Carter” 150 acres on Gleeb? Swamp. Signed Phill Parr. Witnesses: John Smith, Chares [sic] his E mark Jones, and an illegible name. Recorded in Gloucester County Court, 16 June 1701, and subsequently in Essex County Court. [Essex County, Virginia, Deed Book 10, pages 88 and 88b.]

The will of William Young, dated 19 December 1718, mentions his “cozen” Richard Carter, to whom he gives a horse Wanton. Richard Carter is listed as being a landowner whose land adjoins that of William Young. Richard Carter was a witness to this will. [Essex County, Virginia, Will Book 3, pages 87–89.]

An inventory of the estate of Capt. Wm. Young returned 20 September 1720 includes a receipt from Richard Carter. [Essex County, Virginia, Wills, Inventories and Settlements of Estates No. 3, 1717–1721, pages 211–212, as abstracted by John Frederick Dorman.]

On 7 February 1720, Richard Carter was a witness to the will of Thomas Mountague of Essex County, South Farnham Parish. He appeared in court on 16 May 1721 to prove the will. On 16 June 1730, William Gatewood and Katherin(e) his wife of South Farnham Parish, Essex County, sold to Thomas Williamson Jr., for 2,400 pounds of tobacco, land “which sd land is part of One hundred and fifty acors given by will to Richard Carter by Mr Phillip Parr decd, and the sd Richard Carter being dead without disposeing of the same it doth now of right belond unto the aforesd Katherin Gatewood sister to the sd Richard Carter decd…” Signed Wm Gatewood, Katherine her X mark Gatewood.
