In the will of William Young, dated 13 November 1697, he instructs four of his daughters to contribute to buy a slave for Mary, the wife of Richard Carter. [Essex County, Virginia, Deed Book 9, page 140.]
On 10 November 1698, Mary Carter, Jno Brooks, and Jno Shepherd were bound 40,000 pounds tobacco, as Mary Carter was appointed administratrix of the estate of Richard Carter, deceased. [Essex County, Virginia, Deed Book 9, page 290.]
On 11 June 1701, Henry Smith, James Boughan, and Henry Adcocke were bound, as Henry Smith was appointed the administrator of Mary his late wife who was the widow of Richard Carter, deceased. Witnesses: Henry Goave, John Waters. [Essex County, Virginia, Deed Book 10, page 85.]
