On 2 March 1701, a guardian bond was taken out by Will Young, Wm Covington, and Henry Woodnot in the amount of 20 pounds sterling, as William Young was appointed guardian of Katherine Carter, orphan of Richard Carter deceased. [Essex County, Virginia, Deed Book 10, page 108.]
On 5 February 1727/8, William Fletcher in his will asked that his son William “be under the tuition of Wm Gatewood and Katharine his wife till he shall come to the age of twenty Years”. The will was proved on 19 June 1728. [Essex County, Virginia, Will Book 4, pages 265–265a.]
On 16 June 1730, William Gatewood and Katherin(e) his wife of South Farnham Parish, Essex County, sold to Thomas Williamson Jr., for 2,400 pounds of tobacco, land “which sd land is part of One hundred and fifty acors given by will to Richard Carter by Mr Phillip Parr decd, and the sd Richard Carter being dead without disposeing of the same it doth now of right belond unto the aforesd Katherin Gatewood sister to the sd Richard Carter decd…” Signed Wm Gatewood, Katherine her X mark Gatewood. Catherine Gatewood was named executrix of the 1743 will of her husband William Gatewood. She presented the will in court on 20 March 1743/1744. [Essex County, Virginia, Will Book 7, pages 84–86.]
On 20 March 1743/1744, Catherine Gatewood, John Gatewood and John Burnett were bound £300 sterling for Catherine’s executrixship of the will of William Gatewood. [Essex County, Virginia, Will Book 7, pages 86–88.]
Catharine Carter was mentioned in the 1744 will of her mother-in-law Amy Baker as “Katharine Gatewood the Widow of my son William Gatewood”. Katharine received a gold ring of twenty shillings price. [Essex County, Virginia, Will Book 7, pages 335–337.]

On 16 July 1764, Catharine Gatewood of Essex County, widow, gave slaves and furniture “in pursuance of her promise and agreement” to Thomas Wood of Essex County, carpenter. This was whereas Thomas Wood had married Catharine, daughter of Catharine of the first part. Signed Katherine her x mark Gatewood. Witnesses: William Flitcher, Richd Brown. Recorded 16 July 1764.
