“Edwin Hundley was born in the year 1801 August 19th” [Hundley Family Bible, Library of Virginia Accession #24598a.]

In an undated petition, Thomas Hunley, Larkin Hunley, Austin Hunley, Elizabeth Hunley, Edwin Hunley, Andrew Hunley and Nancy Hunley, the said Larkin, Austin, Elizabeth, Edwin, Andrew and Nancy infants under the age of 21 by Elizabeth their next friend and in her own right, complained that Thomas Hunley died on ____ 1815 intestate leaving a widow Elizabeth and eight children, your orators and oratrices and George M. Hunely who is the administrator. [Throughout the petition, the name Hunley was originally Hundley, but all the Ds have been crossed through.] [Essex County, Virginia, Box Chancery No. 36, item 36-I-16.]

In about 1820, orators and oratrices Geo: M. Hundley, Larkin Hundley, Charles Layton and Betsey his wife who was Betsey Hundley, Austin Hundley, and Andrew Hundley, Edwin Hundley and Nancy Hundley infants by Geo: M. Hundley their next friend complained to the Chancery Court. That Thomas Hundley the father of your orators and oratrices, and also of Thomas Hundley, died some years ago. His widow Elizabeth recently died. From about 1820. [Essex County, Virginia, Box Chancery No. 42, item 42-J-18.]

On December 30 1825, a final division of the estate of Elizabeth Hundley was made. “Received of Thomas Hundley admr of Elizabeth Hundley decd the sum One hundred and thirteen dollars & four & 1/4 cents it being the amount due to each of us from said Thomas Hundley as the admr of the said Elizabeth Hundley decd and is in full for his administration on said Estate” Signed Geo: M Hundley, Austin Hundley, Charles G Layton, Edwin Hundley, Andrew Hundley, Robt Mackan, Larkin Hundley. Witnesses: Thomas Hundley, Jno: Downey, Cyrus Segar, Thomas Jesse jr. Ordered recorded on 18 June 1827. [Essex County, Virginia, Will Book 21, page 125.]

On 21 November 1831, Edwin Hundley and Andrew Hundley were bound in the penalty of $2,000 for Edwin Hundley’s administration of the estate of William M. Jesse, deceased. [Essex County, Virginia, Will Book 22, page 351.]

In 1831, orators and oratrices George M. Hundley and Mary E. his wife, Henry L. Carter admor of Anthony Thornton decd, Hannah B. Montague, Edwin Hundley and Virginia F. his wife, and the said Edwin Hundley as admor of William M. Jesse deceased and John A. Jesse an infant by the said Edwin Hundley his next friend complained to the Chancery Court of Essex County. That John Montague died testate, leaving slaves to daughter Amelia. That Amelia first married one Wm Montague by whom she had your orators and one Lucy B. Montague who married Charles S. Thornton. Then William Montague died and Amelia married Thomas Jesse and they had sons John A. Jesse and Wm M. Jesse and died on about _______ 1830, and shortly thereafter Thomas Jesse died. Wm Jesse died an infant in 1831 Administration of his estate was granted to Edwin Hundley. [Essex County, Virginia, Box Chancery No. 38, item 38-E-1.]

Orators and oratrices George M. Hundley and Mary his wife who was Mary Montague, Robert Daniel younger and Lucinda his wife who was Lucinda Jesse, Keturah Evans who was Keturah Jesse and John A. Jesse by Aeneas Montague his guardian and next friend, which said Mary, Lucinda and Keturah were sisters of the half blood of William M. Jesse deceased. That William M. Jesse died an infant and intestate and without having had children, leaving John A. Jesse a brother of the whole blood and your orators Mary, Lucinda, Keturah with Virginia F. Hundley who was Virginia F. Montague who married Edwin Hundley, and Lucy B. Thornton who before her marriage with Charles T. Thornton was Lucy B. Montague and Hannah B. Boyd who before her marriage to ________ Boyd was Hannah B. Montague. [Essex County, Virginia, Box Chancery No. 38, item 38-J-31.]

On 20 January 1834, Jones C Clopton, John Saddler, William Oliver, Thomas Hundley, and Edwin Hundley were bound in the penalty of $9,000 for Jones C Clopton’s and John Saddler’s execution of the will of George M Hundley. [Essex County, Virginia, Will Book 23, page 229.]

On 1 October 1834, an inventory and appraisal of the estate of Mrs. Lydia Alexander was made by Cyrus Segar, John Saddler, and Edwin Hundley. [Essex County, Virginia, Will Book 23, page 388.]

“Edwin Hundley died in the year 1837 the 29th day of April” [Hundley Family Bible, Library of Virginia Accession #24598a.]

“Edwin Hundley died 29th March 1837 born 29th Apr 1801”. The words “Rose Hill” are added, but it’s unclear whether this pertains to birth or death. [Hundley Family Bible, Library of Virginia Accession #24437.]

On 19 June 1837, Larkin Hundley, Andrew Hundley, and Wm. Oliver were bound in the penalty of $10,000 for Larkin Hundley’s administration of the estate of Edwin Hundley. [Essex County, Virginia, Will Book 24, page 138.]

On 13 September 1837, an inventory and appraisal of the estate of Edwin Hundley, deceased, was made by F. S. Mitchell, Geo: W Shelton and James Dyke. Includes Richmond (a negro man), Sam a boy, Philis a Woman, Scymlira[?] a child, Eliza a Woman, James Peachey a boy, James Bristow a boy, George a boy, John a boy, Maria a Girl, Lucy a Girl. [Essex County, Virginia, Will Book 24, pages 343–344.]

The estate of Edwin Hundley in account with Larkin Hundley, administrator, from 1837 to 1839 was ordered recorded on 18 February 1839. [Essex County, Virginia, Will Book 24, pages 354–357.]

Orators and oratrix Abner G. Bohannon and Mary E. his wife and her children and Chauncey G. Griswold trustee for Mary E. and her children. That in 1834 George M. Hundley died testate. He devised to your oratrix Mary E. one half of his estate for life and one half forever. That at her death the lands that were lent were to be equally divided between the children of Edwin Hundley and Thomas Hundley and that those children are infants. The children of Thomas are Thomas L., George A.W., Richard, and Benjamin Hundley. The children of Edwin are George E., Mary A., and Robert M. Hundley. [Essex County, Virginia, Box Chancery No. 39, item 39-J-2.]

In an undated petition, oratrix Virginia F. Dunn filed in Chancery Court. That her first husband Edwin Hundley died in 1837 leaving children Mary, Edwin and George. Edwin died intestate. George died soon after an infant without issue. Virginia F. then married James Dunn who has also died. [Essex County, Virginia, Box Chancery No. 40, item 40-B-12.] Mary and Edwin are further identified as Mary A. Hundley and Edwin L. Hundley. [Essex County, Virginia, Box Chancery No. 40, item 40-B-11.]

The estate of Edwin Hundley in account with Larkin Hundley, administrator, from 1839 to 1840 was ordered recorded on 20 July 1840. [Essex County, Virginia, Will Book 24, pages 496–497.]
