On 26 August 1751, Thomas Haile, planter, of Essex and Elizabeth his wife mortgaged land to James Mills of Essex, merchant. For £200 current money to Thomas Haile, land given and granted to Thomas Haile by his father John Haile deceased bearing date 18 October 1742, 120 acres in Southfarnham Parish bordering Mary Dicks, and also four Negroe slaves: To (or Jo?) a Young fellow Bought by the sd Thomas Haile of James Boughan, Crease a Negro Woman Bought of Richard Gatewood & James & Austin her sons. Signed Thomas Haile, Elizabeth her x mark Haile. Witnesses: Frances Pollard, Robert Rae, N. Pendleton, John Figgins Junr. Recorded 21 April 1752. [Essex County, Virginia, Deed Book 26, pages 1–4.] Elizabeth was unable to travel to the courthouse to acknowledge the deed because of “Infirmity of her Health” and was ordered to be visited. On 19 August 1752, Thomas Haile of Essex County, planter, and Elizabeth his wife leased and released land to John Latane of the same, gentleman. For 5 shillings/£180 current money, 200 acres granted by Thomas Haile’s father John Haile by deed dated 18 October 1742 that was mortgaged to James Mills gentleman, merchant. Mortgage had been assigned over to John Latane. This tract is part taken out of land that Thomas bought of his brother Benjamin Haile and borders Mary Dicks. On 20 May 1753, Thomas Haile and Elizabeth his wife of Essex County sold to John Latane. Lease and release. For 5 shillings/£163, 324 acres “which the said Thomas Haile purchased of his Brother Benjamin Haile by a certain Deed … which said Land was given by a Deed of Gift to ye sd Benjamin Haile by his father John Haile bearing Date the Eighteenth day of October in the year of our Lord 1742 And the said Land was Mortgaged by the sd Thomas Hail unto Andrew Crawford Gent. by a Deed of Feoffment Dated the Sixteenth of april in the year of our Lord one thousand seven hundred and fifty one which Deed the said Mortgagee has Delivered to the said John Latane and the widow of John Haile the Father [illegible] & the Mother of Thos. Haile the Bargainer doth hereby Acknowlege her right of all Lands to ye Barginae reserveing only one hundred Acres to herself During her Natural Life …” Signed Thomas Haile, Eliza her + mark Haile. Witnesses: Jno Clements Richd Hodges, Jno Smether, Archibald Ritchie. Witnesses to Mary Haile: Peggay Paggett, James Munday, Wm Daingerfield Jur, Archibald Ritchie.
