John Haile was a member of the 55th Virginia Infantry during the Civil War: Haile, John: Farmer. Born in, and resident of, Essex Co. Florid complexion, black eyes, dark hair, 5'8" tall. Elected 2nd Lt. in Co. A, 4/28/61. Mustered in 5/21/61. Elected 1st Lt. 8/20/61. Sat on a court martial 12/4–9/61. Had been suffering from a hernia for twenty years. Resigned on 4/2/62, aged 38. On 5 June 1872, John Haile and Matilda R. Wright were married in Essex County, Virginia. He was 48, a widower, a farmer, son of Robert G. Haile and Elizabeth B. Jones. She was 33, single, daughter of Charles S. H. Wright and Lucinda Gresham. Both were born in Essex County and resided there. [Essex County, Virginia, Marriage Register I, page 30.]

A plaque in the Essex County courthouse states that Lieut. John Haile Haile Sr. died on 15 August 1893.
