Susan P. Gatewood was mentioned in the 30 March 1830 will of her father, Philip P. Gatewood. She was to receive a feather bed and furniture at the age of 15. Proved 19 July 1830. [Essex County, Virginia, Will Book 22, page 116.]

In about 1840, Susan Gatewood complained the the Chancery Court in Essex County: oratrix Susan Gatewood infant by William J. Clarkson her next friend. That her father Philip Gatewood died many years ago leaving your oratrix and children Anne and William and a widow Fanny. Anne and William both died intestate and without issue.
