Philip Gatewood was listed in the 1809 will of his father William F. Gatewood. [Essex County, Virginia, Will Book 17, pages 135–137.]

On 16 July 1821, Hugh Campbell and a Philip Gatewood were bound $15,000 for Hugh Campbell’s being appointed administrator de bonis non of Hugh Campbell. See also RIN 2727, 4455, 4544, 4756. [Essex County, Virginia, Will Book 19, page 221.]

A bill of complaint states that William F. Gatewood left a daughter Polly who married John Clarkson, son Philip P., son Leneus C., grandson Thomas. He also had a son John H. who died. He left a widow Sally. [Essex County, Virginia, Box Chancery No. 25, item 25-I-18.]

The will of Philip P. Gatewood was dated 30 March 1830. To son William C. Gatewood one small gun and one silver watch. To two daughters, Ann E. Gatewood and Susan P. Gatewood, one feather bed and furniture when they arrive at 15 years. Wife to sell land as necessary. Wife Frances Gatewood to be executrix with David P. Wright, Thomas H. Pitts and John Clarkson, executors. Signed Philip P. Gatewood. Witnesses: Thomas Clarkson, John Clarkson, DP Wright. Proved 19 July 1830. [Essex County, Virginia, Will Book 22, page 116.]

On 19 July 1830, John Clarkson and Lineus C. Gatewood were bound in the penalty of $4,000 for John Clarkson’s executorship of the estate of Philip P. Gatewood, deceased. [Essex County, Virginia, Will Book 22, page 117.]

On 15 August 1830, an inventory and appraisal of the estate of Philip P. Gatewood was made by Wm. H. Hutchason, Edward Wright, and D. P. Wright. [Essex County, Virginia, Will Book 22, pages 164–166.]

In about 1840, Susan Gatewood complained the the Chancery Court in Essex County: oratrix Susan Gatewood infant by William J. Clarkson her next friend. That her father Philip Gatewood died many years ago leaving your oratrix and children Anne and William and a widow Fanny. Anne and William both died intestate and without issue.
