On 10 April 1706, John Burnett son and heire of John Burnett deceased of the County of Essex, for 70 pounds of tobacco sold unto James Boughan of ye said County 2 acres more or less in Essex County by the said Boughan’s Mill-Damm. Signed JBurnett. Witnesses: James Boughan Junr, Benja ffisher, John Gatewood. Recorded 10 April 1706. [Essex County, Virginia, Deed Book 12, pages 211–212.]

On 10 January 1707, Amy Gatewood, Richard Gatewood, John Burnett and Francis Shackelford were bound £500 sterling for Amy and Richard’s executorship of the estate of John Gatewood. [Essex County, Virginia, Deed Book 12, page 329.]

In June or July 1710, John Burnett served on a jury in a land dispute. His signature from 1[?] July 1710 is extant; his penmanship suggests that he was used to writing. On 17 June 1735, a John Burnett witnessed a deed from Patrick Bolen and Katherine his wife and John Turbett of the County of Spotsylvania to Thomas Burke of the County of Essex and parish of Southfarnham. [Essex County, Virginia, Deed Book 21, pages 14–16.]

On 20 March 1743/1744, Catherine Gatewood, John Gatewood and John Burnett were bound £300 sterling for Catherine’s executrixship of the will of William Gatewood. [Essex County, Virginia, Will Book 7, pages 86–88.]

On 6 and 7 October 1745, John Burnett was mentioned as a bordering landowner to a tract in Southfarnham parish leased and released from John Griggs to John Boughan. [Essex County, Virginia, Deed Book 19, pages 5–8.]

On 4 December 1755, a John Burnett cast votes for Colonel William Daingerfield and Colonel Francis Smith for burgesses of Essex County. [Essex County, Virginia, Deed Book 27, pages 248–252.]

On 20 December 1757, a John Burnett witnessed the will of Thomas Edmondson of the County of Essex. [Essex County, Virginia, Will Book 11, pages 228–231.]
