On 10 April 1706, John Burnett son and heire of John Burnett deceased of the County of Essex, for 70 pounds of tobacco sold unto James Boughan of ye said County 2 acres more or less in Essex County by the said Boughan’s Mill-Damm. On 10 January 1707, Amy Gatewood, Richard Gatewood, John Burnett and Francis Shackelford were bound £500 sterling for Amy and Richard’s executorship of the estate of John Gatewood. [Essex County, Virginia, Deed Book 12, page 329.]
In June or July 1710, John Burnett served on a jury in a land dispute. His signature from 1[?] July 1710 is extant; his penmanship suggests that he was used to writing.
