Ann Gatewood was mentioned in the 30 March 1815 will of her father, William Newbill, proved 17 April 1815. [Essex County, Virginia, Will Book 18, pages 148–149.]

In 1824, petition was made to the Honble Judge of the Chancery District Court of Fedrs’g. That William Newbill of the County of Essex died in 1815 testate leaving a wife Rebecca and children Thomas, John, William, George, James, Richard, and Polly Newbill, Elizabeth Garrett and Ann Gatewood. On 16 April 1825, Ann Gatewood wife of Traverse Gatewood answered a bill of complaint in chancery [43-L-1]. [Essex County, Virginia, Box Chancery No. 43, item 43-L-1.]

Orators and oratrices Rybourne M. Gatewood, John F. Gatewood, Ellen A. Gatewood and Juliet R. Gatewood, the last three infants under the age of 21 by Rybourne M. Gatewood their next friend. That Travis Gatewood their father died testate leaving a widow Nancy and eight children vizt Theodrick W. Gatewood, Richard F. Gatewood, Mary M. Gatewood who has married Benedict Clark, Rybourne M. Gatewood, John F. Gatewood, Ellen A. Gatewood, Juliet R. Gatewood, and Thomas Gatewood who died in 1844 underage. The widow died in March 1845 intestate.
