Charles C. Smith was mentioned in the 3 June 1828 will of his grandfather, John Dunn, proved 15 September 1828. To my grandson Charles C. Smith the balance of the land which I now hold that I received from my Fathers Estate, together with the mill seat attached thereto, and all appurtenances. [Essex County, Virginia, Will Book 21, pages 286–288.]

On 2 January 1830, John Smith, John H. Smith and Charles C. Smith entered into a bond of $2,102 payable to Peter J. Derieux, adminsitrator with the will annexed of John Dunn deceased. Whereas Peter Derieux has delivered to John Smith, in right of his wife Polly Smith, as a legatee under the will of John Dunn, her proportion of the slaves of John Dunn — Dick, Hannah and child, Cyrus, James, Susanna, William and Fanny — and whereas claims against John Dunn may hereafter be brought against Peter J. Derieux, and if the estate should not be sufficient to pay those claims, then John Smith, John H. Smith and Charles C. Smith shall refund to Peter J. Derieux sufficient money to satisfy the claim. On 8 May 1834, an inventory and appraisal of the estate of Casey Greenwood was made by Amos Cauthorn, J. H. Smith, and Chas. C. Smith. [Essex County, Virginia, Will Book 23, page 285.]

In 1843, orators and oratrices James William infant of James Dunn decd who sued by Virginia F. Dunn his mother and next friend, Peter T. Duff and Olivia Duff his wife who was Olivia D. Dunn daughter of the said James Dunn decd, Thomas Parron and Julia D. his wife who was Julia D. Dunn another daughter of James Dunn decd, Charles C. Smith and Emily his wife who was Emily Dunn another daughter of James Dunn decd, William R. Allen who married Drusilla another daughter of James Dunn since dead, Arthur F. Allen an infant of William R. Allen and Drusilla by his father and next friend, Cordelia Dunn another daughter of James Dunn, and Dorinda M. Dunn another daughter of James Dunn an infant who sued by James A. Dunn her next friend, complained that James Dunn died about __ January 1843, testate. For division of his estate. On 16 December 1850, James A. Dunn, Charles C Smith and Muscoe Garnett were bound $1,500 for James A. Dunn’s administration de bonis non with the will annexed of James Dunn deceased. [Essex County, Virginia, Will Book 26, page 662.]

On 14 August 1856, Charles C. Smith and Elima his wife of the County of Spotsylvania sold to Thomas Boughan of the County of Essex. For $1,550, all right title and interest in a parcel in Essex County called Springfield except one hundred acres conveyed to deed dated 1 August 1856 to Temple Brizendine, bounded by the lands of Geo: Hill, Robert Lumpkin, Mrs Catharine Micou, Miss Betsy Walden and the main road leading from Howertons church to Tappahannock, 175 acres by survey. Signed Chas C Smith, Emila C Smith. Ordered recorded 27 February 1857. [Essex County, Virginia, Deed Book 51, page 55.]

In 1865, orators and oratrices Charles C. Smith and Emily C. his wife, Peter T. Duff and Olivia Duff his wife, Christopher Newbill and Mary Newbill his wife, Dorinda M. Cauthorn, Arthur F. Allen, James W. Parron, Lucy E. Parron, Cordelia Dunn and Edwin Hundley complained to the Chancery Court. That James W. Dunn died in 1864 intestate unmarried leaving Emily, Olivia, Mary, Dorinda, Cordelia all 1/2 sisters, James A. Dunn and Edwin Hundley 1/2 brothers, and Arthur F. Allen son of a 1/2 sister, James W. Parron and Lucy E. Parron children of another 1/2 sister his only heirs. [Essex County, Virginia, Box Chancery No. 42, item 42-F-10.]
