JUDGE MOORE GONE WELL KNOWN CITIZEN WAS SEVENTY—SIX YEARS OLD

PROMINENT IN THE COUNTY

Had Been Judge of the County Court - Held in High Regard for His Integrity and Worth
_________________________________________________

The death of Judge S. M. Moore occurred Thursday morning at the late home on E. Maple, intestinal poisoning and complications of old age being the cause. He had been in feeble health for about two years, almost losing his eyesight and not being able to give attention to business matters to any great extent. There being no certainty as to when the end would come only a part of the family was present at the time of death.

He was born at Troy, Miami county, Ohio, Jan. 15, 1830. He came to Iowa with his parents in 1844 living in Van Buren and Lee counties till 1850. In 51-52 he attended the Farmer's college at Cincinnati O. In 1852 he was married to Miss Mary J. Pendergast who still survives. To them were born the following surviving children: Addison, Will, Alice E., Irvin and Charles, of whom Alice E. and Irvin live in Centerville. In 1859 the family came to Centerville and here he has resided ever since, gaining the regard of the people and holding it through his long and useful life. In 1853 he became a member of the Methodist Episcopal church, in 1857 of t h e I.O.O.F. and in 1860 of the Masonic order. He practiced law and since 1862 has been a member of the Appanoose county bar.

Judge Moore was a man remarkable for his devotion to principle, his even going Christian temperament , his unfailing integrity, and for the unanimous approval with which those knowing him speak of his good qualities and worth as a citizen. He was for years a trustee in the Methodist church, ever helpful in counsel, and when he was unable to attend the meetings his name was kept on the list as an honorary member of the board, though the church laws had to be interperted rather closely to permit this. The men with whom he was long associated in church affairs are unstinted in their approving estimates of his life and Christian deeds. The children had in him a father worthy the highest reverence. He was entrusted by his fellow citizens with various places of responsibilities, being at one time county judge and in other ways the confidence of the people in him has been shown from time to time.

The funeral will be at 2 o'clock Saturday at the Methodist church. The I.O.O.F. ritual services will be used
