Essex County Court of 10 August 1699. “Mary Boughan Complains that Jno Puckett did Some time about ye 24 day of July assault, beat & kick her after a cruel [blot] So that she was bruised and incapable of going about her affairs, whereupon Its refer’d to a Jury for Tryal who (by name Henry Woodnutt, Jno Hawkins, Tho Short, Wm Ayers, Job Virgid, Wm Irving, Jno Parker, Bartho Vawter, Tho Ramsey, Tho Munday Tho Hucklescott, & Geo Lloyd) being Sworne return for verdt: we of ye Jury do find for the abuse of the plt one thousand pounds of Tobo wch is ordered to be recorded and that the defendt pay the said [sic] one thousand pounds of Tobacco to the Plt with Costs als Exo ffrom wch the defendt appeals to ye 6th day of the next Genll Court Its therefore ordered that he give Security to prosente the same according to Law. John Picket, Henry Picket and Jefffrey Dyer bind themselves their heirs & Joyntly and Severally in the sum of five thousand pounds to tobo: for the appellants due prosecution of his said appeale …. Robt Burras being Subpoena’d as an evidence in ye difference between Mary Boughan & Jno Picket and attending Two dayes its ordered that the sd Boughan pay him for the same acccording to Law with Costs als Exo … David Holt being Subpoena’d as an evidence in ye difference between Mary Boughan & Jno Picket & attending Two days its ordered that ye sd Boughan pay him for the same according to Law with Costs als Exo. … upon the complaint of Mary Boughan its ordered that Jno. Picket give bond with Security for ye good behaviour for his Servt. by name Jno Dobson and that he sd Picket pay Costs … Jno Picket Henry Picket acknowledged above for ye sd Jno. Pickets Servt: good behaviour wch is on ye mocon of Mary Boughan ordered to be recorded.” [Essex County, Virginia, Deed Book 10 reverse, page 6.]

On 11 August 1699, John Picket of the County of Essex was bound two thousand pounds of Tobo: & Caske, the condition of the obligacon is such that whereas ye above bounden Jno Picket hath a Servant Man named Jno Dopson who hath abused Mary Boughan widow, Now if ye sd Jno Dopson do from time to time & dureing ye time of ye sd Jno Dopsons Service behave himselfe & keep his Majties Peace in all things as an honest man should or ought to do towards ye sd Mary Boughan, then this obligacon to be void. Signed Jno Picket, Henry his H mark Picket. Acknowledged in court. [Essex County, Virginia, Deed Book 10 reverse, page 8.]

John was mentioned in the 18 October 1701 will of his father, Henry Pickett, proved 10 August 1702. “Item I Give unto my Loving Sonn John Pickett all my debts which is owing of me he paying of my Debts which I ow … ordaining my Loveing wife & my two Sonns John & William Exectricke & Exectors of this my last Will & Testament.” [Essex County, Virginia, Deeds and Wills 10, page 117.]

On 10 November 1702, Will Johnson & Eliz his wife, John Picket, Will Picket, John Gatewood and Richard Jones of the County of Essex were bound the sum of £500 sterling, Will Johnson and Eliz his wife & John Picket & Will Picket having obtained a Probate of the last Will & Testamt of Henry Picket deced. Signed Wm. Johnson, Eliz her 8 mark Johnson, John Picket, William Picket, John Gatewood, Richard Jones. Witnesses: Adam Denning, Tho: Stretton. [Essex County, Virginia, Deeds and Wills 10, page 121.]

On 12 November 1702, John Pickett, James Boughan, and James Fullerton were bound £200 sterling for John Pickett’s guardianship of William Picket, orphan of Henry Picket. Witnesses: Edw: Gouldman, Erasmus Allen. [Essex County, Virginia, Deed Book 10, page 126.]

On 10 May 1710, Ann Hardee, Jno Pickett and Alexandr Howe were bound £500 for Ann Hardee’s administration of the goods, rights and credits of Andrew Hardee deceased. Signed Ann Hardee, Jno. Pickett, Alexander his A mark How. [Essex County, Virginia, Deed Book 13, page 327.]

On 14 March 1712/13, Henry Boughan, John Pickett and Mary his wife, Francis Pierce and Eliza his wife, and William Cox were summoned to answer a plea by James Boughan, which sued for the division of 600 acres held in common. “Henry Boughan John Pickett and Mary his wife ffrancis Pierce and Eliza his wife and Wm Cox were Sumoned to answere James Boughan of a plea wherefore whereas the sd Henry, John & Mary his wife the sd ffrancis and Eliza his wife the said Wm and the sd James do hold together and undivided to them & their heirs Six hundred acres of Land wth the appurtenances in the parish of S farnham in the County of Essex the Defts refuse to make partition thereof among them and the plt according to the form of the statute in this Case made & provided and the same to be Done do unjustly hinder agt the form of the Statute and whereupon the said James saith that the said Deftdts and this plt together & undivided do hold to them and their heirs the Land and appurtenances afd whereof it belongs to the plt to have one third and the sd Defts the other two thirds Separatly So that the sd plt may Improve his third Separatly and the said Defts may make Improvemt of their two thirds Seperatly the sd Defts to make peticon with the plt according to the for[m — page torn] of the Statute in this Case made & provided do deny and the same do unjustly hinder Contrary to the [torn] sd statute &c whereby the plt Saith he is the worse and damage hath one hundred pou[torn] the Defts being returnd Sumoned and failing to appear It is therefore Considered by the Court an attacht be granted to the plt agt the body of the sd Defts So that they be had at ye next Court to answere upon the premises and that the Lands aforesaid by Distrained & put into ye posession of the plt untill they the Defts Shall appear and answere as aforesaid” [Essex County, Virginia, Order Book 4, pages 511–512.] This seems to be related to an earlier case that was dismissed 12 December 1712: “The accon of partition brot by James Boughan agt Henry Boughan John Pickett & Mary his wife ffrancis Pierce & Eliza his wife and Wm Cox is Dismissed the plt failing to prosecute.” [Essex County, Virginia, Order Book 4, page 489.] On 10 April 1713, the suit of 14 March 1713 was dismissed: “The accon brot by James Boughan agt Henry Boughan John Pickett & Mary his wife & ffrancis Pierce and Eliza his wife and Wm Cox is Dismissed ye plt failing to prosecute.” [Essex County, Virginia, Order Book 4, page 521.]

On 21 January 1715/16, John Pickett and Anexander How of the County of Essex and parish of Southfarnum discharged Thomas Whealler of the County & parish aforesd of two alphons [orphans] estates now in ye hands of ye sd Thomas Whealer belonging to Andrew Hardee of this County decst. Signed Jno. Pickett, Alixa. his A mark How. Witnesses: Jno. Billups, John Griggs. [Essex County, Virginia, Deed Book 14, page 513.]

On 19 September 1765, whereas John Pickett and Mary his wife have by a deed of gift dated 20 February 1765 conveyed unto their son Mace Pickett a certain Tract of Land in Essex County, and whereas the said Mary is unable to travel to the County Court of Essex, James Jameson and Thomas Lowry of the County of Caroline are commanded to take Acknowledgment from her apart from her husband. On 25 September 1765, James Jameson and Thomas Lowry certify that Mary Acknowledged the deed to be her act. [Essex County, Virginia, Deed Book 30, page 57.]
