On 2 January 1830, William S. Croxton entered into a bond of $300 payable to Peter J. Derieux, adminsitrator with the will annexed of John Dunn deceased. Whereas Peter Derieux has delivered to Sophronia Smith, granddaughter of John Dunn a small negro girl named Chloe a daughter of Hannah; whereas William S. Croxton has since intermarried with Sophronia Smith; and whereas claims against John Dunn may hereafter be brought against Peter J. Derieux — if the estate should not be sufficient to pay those claims, then William S. Croxton shall refund to Peter J. Derieux sufficient money to satisfy the claim. On 11 November 1831, John Trible, Richard H. Harwood, Smith Young, William Smith senr., James Durham, William S. Croxton, Moses Crow, Francis G. W. Smith, Hundley Moody, Mace Clements, Richard T. Hundley and Peter Broocke served in an inquiry on the death of “Thornton, a negro boy slave the property of Addison Glascock”, that “a certain person unknown did kill and murder the said Thornton, by inflicting several blows upon his head”. On July 1839, Jas. Semple, Muscoe G Wood, John H Smither, John Bird, William Wright, William S Croxton, Thomas Harper, George Rose, Lewis D Brookes Was H Purkins, George M Trible & William F Burnett served on the jury of an inquisition at the home of Frances Boughan into the death of an infant child by Mary, the property of Lucy Boughan and upon the land of Washington H Purkins. [Essex County, Virginia, Will Book 24, page 399.]

On 13 March 1841, Henry H. Boughan, as coroner for Essex County, led an inquisition taken at the public highway near Mrs. Elizabeth B. Allen’s (deceased) into the death of Henry, a slave the property of Mrs. Elizabeth Hundley, then and there lying dead. A jury consisting of James Semple, M G Wood, Jas Durham, John J Wright, Henry Crow, Z. M. P. Carter, Baylor W Hill, Johnson Games, Philip Coleman, Willis Brooks, Caleb A Noel and Wm S Croxton state that Henry came to his death on the 12th Day of March, that he had no marks of violence, and died by being chilled to death.
