Sophronia Smith was mentioned in the 3 June 1828 will of her grandfather, John Dunn, proved 15 September 1828. To granddaughter Sophronia Smith, a small negro girl named Chloe (a daughter of Hannah). [Essex County, Virginia, Will Book 21, pages 286–288.]
On 2 January 1830, William S. Croxton entered into a bond of $300 payable to Peter J. Derieux, adminsitrator with the will annexed of John Dunn deceased. Whereas Peter Derieux has delivered to Sophronia Smith, granddaughter of John Dunn a small negro girl named Chloe a daughter of Hannah; whereas William S. Croxton has since intermarried with Sophronia Smith; and whereas claims against John Dunn may hereafter be brought against Peter J. Derieux — if the estate should not be sufficient to pay those claims, then William S. Croxton shall refund to Peter J. Derieux sufficient money to satisfy the claim. Sophronia Ann Croxton was mentioned in the 27 May 1839 will of her father, John Smith, proved on 17 February 1840. [Essex County, Virginia, Will Book 24, pages 442–444.]
On 8 January 1844, an inquisition was taken at the house of Wm. S. Croxton in Essex County before Jas: Wright a Justice of the Peace acting as Coroner, upon the view of the body of Sophronia Ann Croxton late of the said County then and there lying dead. Upon the oaths of James Semple, Leond Henley, Henry W L Temple, Amos Cauthorn, Richard L. Covington, William J. Clarkson, Walter G. Covington, James Durham Jr:, George W. Philips, John S. Trible, Richard D. Dunn and Jacob Durham, charged to inquire when, where, how and after what manner the said Sophronia Ann Croxton died, state that she died on the 6th day of January, that she had no marks of violence appearing on her body, and died by the visitation of God a natural way, and not otherwise.
