“William A. Garnett and Dorothy Booker was married 12th of Nov. A. D. 1812” [Booker-Garnett-Lyell family Bible at the Virginia State Archives, Acc. 24585.]

On 20 March 1815, William A. Garnett and Thomas Garnett were bound in the penalty of $20,000 for William A. Garnett’s execution of the last will and testament of Lewis Booker, deceased. [Essex County, Virginia, Will Book 18, page 140.]

On 20 April 1818, Wm. A. Garnett and Thomas Garnett were bound in the penalty of $3,000 for Wm. A. Garnett’s administrations of the goods, chattels and credits of Judith Booker, deceased. [Essex County, Virginia, Will Book 18, page 480.]

On 21 September 1818, Robert G Haile, Henry H Boughan, Wm T Upshaw, Wm A Garnett, Washington H Purkins and Graves Burke were appointed commissioners to divide the land of Major Boughan deceased. [Essex County, Virginia, Box Chancery No. 37, item 37-I-27.]

The will of William A. Garnett was dated 19 October 1832. After debts paid, half of estate to wife Dorothy Garnett, but at her death or marriage that property to son George L. Garnett. The balance of property to George L. Garnett, he to take possession at the age of 21. Dorothy Garnett to be executrix without security. Signed Wm. A. Garnett. Witnesses: Wilcey Fogg, Wm S. Croxton, Sarah M Garnett. On 20 July 1835, proved by William S. Croxton; on 17 August 1835 proved by Wilcey Fogg. Certificate granted to Dorothy Garnett in order to her obtaining probate. On 19 August 1835, Dorothy Garnett was bound in the penalty of $500 for her execution of the estate of William A. Garnett, deceased. [Essex County, Virginia, Will Book 23, page 391.]

In about 1846, oratrix Dorothy Garnett complained that during the lifetime of her deceased husband William A. Garnett to wit on 25 July 1832 by a certain deed of trust of William Garnett and Dorothy Garnett of the first part and William S. Croxton of the second part, all of the County of Essex, the said mortgagers conveyed all their interest and title in certain property. William A. Garnett died about the __ day of _______, ____, having left a last will and testament naming Dorothy executrix. In a suit in chancery, your oratrix and George L Garnett, son of your oratrix and William A Garnett, were plaintiffs, and Wm S Croxton was defendant. A decree of 20 July 1835 pronounced your oratrix trustee. After settlement she found herself indebted to the estate of William A. Garnett $259.30 in principal and $15.55 in interest. Due from her as executrix is $844.10 in principal and $307.73 in interest. She has not received monies due to her. That James Garnett, Samuel T. Moorman who intermarried with Emily Garnett who is since deceased without issue may be made defendants. No date, but decree on 21 December 1846. Garnett vs Garnett.
