On 18 December 1797, Lewis Dix, James Dix and John Jones were bound $4,000 current money when Lewis Dix was appointed inspector of tobacco at Hobbs Hole. Signed Lewis Dix, James Dix, John Jones. [Essex County, Virginia, Deed Book 34, page 466.]

John was mentioned in the 30 March 1799 will of his father in law, Benjamin Fisher, proved on 15 April 1799, and was named one of the executors thereto. [Essex County, Virginia, Will Book 15, pages 453–454.]

On 15 December 1800, Elizabeth B. Allen, William Latane and a John Jones were bound $20,000 for Elizabeth B. Allen’s execution of the last will and testament of Thomas Allen. Signed Elizabeth her X mark Allen, WLatane, John Jones. [Essex County, Virginia, Will Book 16, page 50.]

On 21 December 1801, John Jones and Erasmus Jones were bound $1,000 for John Jones’s guardianship of Elizabeth, Nancy and James Burke, orphans of James Burke. [Essex County, Virginia, Guardian Book 3, pages 111–112.]

Nancy, Betsey and James Burke was listed as orphans of James Burke by December 1801. Their guardian, John Jones, submitted his account for 1801 and 1802 on 21 February 1803. [Essex County, Virginia, Guardian Book 3, page 131.]

On 18 January 1802, John Jones and William Howard were bound $1,500 for John Jones’s administration of the estate of Rickard Burke. [Essex County, Virginia, Will Book 16, pages 123–124.]

On 5 February 1803, John Jones witnessed the will of John Burke. [Essex County, Virginia, Will Book 16, pages 200–201.]

On 21 February 1803, Thomas Barton and John Jones were bound $1,200 for Thomas Barton’s executorship of the estate of John Burke. [Essex County, Virginia, Will Book 16, page 201.]

John Jones was mentioned in the 5 March 1807 will of his father, Erasmus Jones, proved on 21 October 1811. [Essex County, Virginia, Will Book 17, pages 313–316.]

On 17 May 1809, John Jones and William Fisher were bound in the penalty of $3,000 for John Jones’s administration of the good, chattels and credits of John Burke, deceased. [Essex County, Virginia, Will Book 17, page 125.]

The estate of John Boughan in account with Major Boughan and John Jones’s arbitration of the division of the estate on 6 June 1809 is recorded in a loose paper. [Essex County, Virginia, Box Chancery 15, item 15-B-20.]

On 9 June 1809, John Jones witnessed the will of William Faver Gatewood. [Essex County, Virginia, Will Book 17, pages 135–137.]

On 21 November 1809, John Jones filed a lawsuit on behalf of Ann Burke. John Jones atty for Ann Burke complains of Joseph Bohannon & Joseph Bohannon in custody &c of a plea of breach of covenent. [Later is Joseph L. and Joseph.] On 2 October 1807 Ann had leased to the defendents during her life a parcel of which Rickard Burke had died seized & possesed. They were to pay rent on 25 December 1808 and every 25 December. They were to cultivate nothing for two years and then any crop but cotton or potatoes or small grain and to take reasonable care of the houses or orchards. On 21 October 1811, John Jones, Wm. Fisher and Barbee Spindle were bound in the penalty of $70,000 for John Jones’s execution of the last will and testament of Erasmus Jones, deceased. [Essex County, Virginia, Will Book 17, pages 320–321.]

In an undated petition, orators and oratrices John Jones and Susanna his wife and John H. Micou and Catharine C. his wife stated that Carter Wood died leaving a wife Susanna who married John Jones. [Essex County, Virginia, Box Chancery No. 37, item 37-F-11.]

On 10 July 1813, an inventory and appraisal of the estate of a John Jones was made by William S. Foster, Winter Bray and Henley Woodward, totaling £396.08.7-1/2. Recorded 18 June 1817. [Essex County, Virginia, Will Book 18, page 415.]

On 21 February 1815, John Jones and Thomas M. Henley were bound $150 for John Jones’s administration of the estate of John Taylor. [Essex County, Virginia, Will Book 18, page 125.]

John Jones was named as an executor in the 20 January 1816 will of his friend Major John Boughan Turner. A certificate of probate was granted to John Jones on 16 April 1816. [Essex County, Virginia, Will Book 18, page 312.]

On 16 April 1816, Jones Jones and William Fisher were bound in the penalty of $5,000 for John Jones’s executorship of the estate of Major J B Turner. [Essex County, Virginia, Will Book 18, page 277.]

In 1817, a John Jones plt complained of Thomas Dix deft in custody &c of a plea of trespass. For that the deft did, on the __ day of ____ 1816 at the county aforesaid with force and arms enter into the clo[illegible] of the plt then [illegible] and then and there with force and arms to wit with whips, sticks & fists did assault, beat wound & ill treat a negro man slave named James the property of the plt. The slave was disabled for a long time. [Essex County, Virginia, Box Chancery No. 28, item 28-B-20.]

On 20 November 1817, John Jones was a justice of the court. [Essex County, Virginia, Order Book 43, page 65.]

On 21 June 1819, George Wright, Thomas Wright, Thomas Pitts, and Joseph Janey were bound in the penalty of $120,000 for George Wright’s exeuctorship of the estate of John Jones. [Essex County, Virginia, Will Book 19, pages 45–46.]

On 21 June 1819, Reuben M. Garnett, Reuben Garnett and Robert G. Haile were bound in the penalty of $120,000 for Reuben M. Garnett’s executorship of the estate of John Jones. [Essex County, Virginia, Will Book 19, page 46.]

The will of John Jones was dated 20 May 1819. Daughter Susan F. Wright. My daughter Susan “shall have the land held by her grandmother Fisher for life under the will of Benjamin Fisher decd, and if my other children or their heirs, by my first marriage should when they respectively arrive to lawful age fail to convey to my said daughter Susan their respective rights, then and in that case I direct that each one so failing or refusing to convey to my said daughter Susan or her heirs shall pay to her or her heirs the sum of four thousand Dollars”. My deceased father. Daughter Martha M. Jones. Wife. Daughter Ellen. Daughters Kitty, Polly, Sarah. Children by first marriage. Son John. Daughter Martha’s mother is still living. Executors: Reuben M. Garnett, William Fisher, George Wright, Walter Bowie. Written 20 May 1819. Signed John Jones. Witnesses: Th. Gresham jr, Linaeus C Gatewood. Proved 21 June 1819. The estate of John Jones, deceased, in account with George Wright, executor, from 1819 to 1822 was returned to court on 17 March 1823 and was ordered recorded on 24 May 1823. [Essex County, Virginia, Will Book 19, pages 376–381.]

On 17 January 1825, James Wright and Thomas Wright Senr were bound $520 for James Wright’s administration of the goods, chattles and credits of John Jones (C). [Essex County, Virginia, Will Book 20, page 102.]

On 3 August 1832, a bill was filed in the case of Garnett vs. Wright. Orators Reubin M. Garnett Guardian of Ellen H. Jones and Thomas C. Gordon and Martha M. M. Gordon the wife of the said Thomas C. Gordon. That John Jones late of the County of Essex the father of your oratrix Martha M. M. departed this life in the month of June 1819 having first made a last will and testament. The land has been divided among the parties thereto entitled—68 acres allotted to your oratrix, her brother John G. Jones and her sister Ellen H. Jones. That the said John G. Jones died an infant without issue in 1824 leaving the following parties entitled to his portion: Susan F. Wright wife of George Wright, Keturah W. Pitts wife of Reubin L. Pitts who has since died leaving an only child John H. Pitts who is at this time an infant, Mary D. Wright wife of Thomas Wright Junr who has also since died leaving two children Selden S. Wright and Sally W. Wright who died an infant, and Sarah A. Jones now Sarah A. Roane, wife of Laurence Roane, the said Susan F., Keturah W., Mary D. and Sarah A. being sisters of the half blood, and your oratrix and the said Ellen H. Jones sisters of the whole blood. Your orator Reubin M. Garnett shews that Ellen H. Jones is entitled to no real estate other than that above mentioned [in the will] and that she is entitled to the following personal estate (including negroes held by her mother Mrs Susan Jones for life under the will of the said John Jones deceased) and 2/13 of 1/7 as distributee of her brother John G. Jones deceased and also an interest in certain property held at this time by Mrs Mary Garnett her grandmother for life under the will her granfather Reubin Garnett [includes a description of property]. Your orator believes that the interest of the said Ellen H. Jones would be greatly promoted by a sale of her interest in the said tract of land. Your orator Thomas C. Gordon and Martha M. On 30 May 1833, Thomas Matthews of lawful age provided a deposition in the case of Garnett vs. Wright taken in Tappahannock in the presence of James Roy Micou Jr., guardian ad litem to Ellen H. Jones. The deponent is well acquainted with the tract of land that was allotted to Martha M. M. Jones now Martha M. M. Gordon, John G. Jones and Ellen H. Jones that was purchased by John Jones deceased their father from Archibald Ritchie and others. The land is nearly destitute of timber or improvements except for an old house of little or no value.
