On 6 October 1745, a John Griggs of the County of King and Queen and Parish of St Stephen leased to John Boughan of the County of Essex and Parish of Southfarnham. For 5 shillings, 200 acres in Southfarnham parish bordering the lands of Thomas Burk, Ben Johnson, and John Burnett. Released on 7 October 1745 for £90. Signed John Griggs. Witnesses: Edward Spence, Jno Wright, Edward Trrile [Trible?]. Ordered recorded 21 January 1745. [Essex County, Virginia, Deed Book 19, pages 5–8.]

The will of John Griggs of Essex County and South Farnham Parish was dated 6 January 1759. Children John, William, Francis, Rachel, Leonard and Cary Griggs. My executors to pay “Elizabeth Davis’s fines if She lives to bring the Child she is with Child with.” and £10 to maintain the child. Henry Griggs is to have £25 deducted from money due from his grandfather Henry Purkins deceased which I received as an executor of Henry Purkins. If he refuses to receive it in that form then he is to receive one shilling. Four youngest children not yet fifteen year of age: Rachel, Francis (daughter), Leonard and Cary. Executors: Mr Archibald Mccall, Henry Purkins, Charles Braugh. Signed John Griggs. Witnesses: John Kerchevall, John Burke, Henry Purkins. Proved 16 January 1759. On 16 January 1759, Henry Purkins and Archibald McCall bound £500 current money for Henry Purkins’s executorship of the last will and testament of John Griggs. [Essex County, Virginia, Will Book 11, page 159.]

In an undated petition for debt, orators William Burke and Thomas Burke complained that in 1759 John Griggs died leaving children John, William, Francis, Rachel, Leonard and Cary, and that Wm [originally said Henry but was crossed out] Purkins was executor, that the said Henry Purkins died leaving Henry Purkins junior his son and executor. On 1 December 1798, Rickard Burke provided a deposition: The deposition of Rickard Burk being of lawfull age taken at the house of the said Rickard Burk in a suit depending between Cary Griggs pltff and William Purkins and William Dunn B executors of Henry Purkins decd who was executor of John Griggs decd defendants this 1st day of December 1798 This deponant being first sworn saith that when John Grigg’s the father of the pltff’s estate was sold he this deponant cryed it and before it was all sold he heard Capt. Thomas Edmondson ask Henry Purkins what John Griggs Estate sold for who answered upwards of Six hundred pounds Quistian by the pltff attorney what has become of John Griggs children answer John Griggs Cary Griggs & Fanny Dudley I believe to be a live the other are all dead and farther this deponant saith not
