Carter was mentioned in the 21 November 1807 will of his father, James Croxton, proved on 15 February 1808. “… I give to my children herein after mentioned (to wit) Catharine Crow, William, Elizabeth Broocks, Lucy Stodghill, Peggy, John, Sally, Delphia, Johannah, Carter, Milly and Eliza, Equally to be divided between them, and their heirs forever …” [Essex County, Virginia, Will Book 17, page 61.]

On 14 May 1822, orators and oratrices Moses Crow and Catharine his wife, Reubin Brooks and Elizabeth his wife, James Stodghill and Lucy his wife, Peggy Croxton, John Croxton, Samuel Doggins and Sally his wife, Delphia Croxton, Johannah Croxton, Carter Croxton an infant under 21 by Washington H. Purkins his Guardian, Eliza Croxton an infant under 21 by Moses Crow her Guardian, and Moses Crow Admr of William Croxton decd who died intestate, which sd Catharine Crow was late Catharine Croxton, Elizabeth Brooks late Elizabeth Croxton, and the said Lucy Stodghill late Lucy Croxton, Peggy Croxton, John Croxton and the said Sally Doggins was late Sally Croxton, Delphia Croxton, Johannah Croxton, Carter Croxton, Eliza Croxton and William Croxton Deceased, were sons and daughters, and Legatees of James Croxton deceased, complained that James Croxton died toward the close of 1807 or the beginning of 1808 leaving a last will and testament. He named his wife Sarah and Joseph Bohannon executors, but only Joseph Bohannon qualified. Another child, Milly Croxton, died an infant unmarried. In 1814 the relict Sarah died. Joseph Bohannon died in 1815. [Essex County, Virginia, Box Chancery No. 48, item 48-D-4.]

The will of Carter Croxton was dated 1 January 1858. To my beloved wife Mary A. Croxton all my estate real and personal, so long as she remains my widow. In the event of her marriage or death, I give to my three sons James C. Croxton, Richard A. Croxton and William H. Croxton my farm, and my three daughters, Elizabeth C. Croxton, Mildred A. Croxton and Sarah L. Croxton, to remain on the farm I now reside as a home for them so long as they remain unmarried. To daughter Elizabeth C. Croxton my negro woman Ellen and her children Arthur. To daughter Mildred A. Croxton negro woman Judith[? — illegible on microfilm] and her child Charles. To daughter Sarah L. Croxton one negro man named Ambrose, and a negro woman Nelly and negro girl Georgianna. To son James C. Croxton negro man Hiram and negro girl Lucelia. To son Richd. A. Croxton negro girl Susan and negro boy John. To son William H. Croxton negro boy Joe and negro girl Lizzy. My wife to board, clothe, and educate my children as she may think best. Beloved wife Mary A. Croxton and my two friends Saml. L. S. Healy and Richd. C. Belfield to be executors. In the event of death or marriage of my wife, personal estate to be divided between my six children. Signed C. Croxton. Witnesses: John Graham, William H. Porter. On 28 June 1858, proved in court. On 25 October 1858, minutes of the Westmoreland County court stated: “The last will and testament of Carter Croxton decd. was again presented in open court, and R. C. Belfield one of the Executors named in the said will, by an instrument of writing signed by him and attested by a witness this day produced to the Court, relinquished his wright to qualify as executor under the said will; & On the motion of Lewis A. L. Lamkin, who made oath and with Henry Beale his security Executed and acknowledged bond in open Court in the penalty of $15000 Conditioned as the law directs, Certificate is granted him the said Lamkin for obtaining letters of administration upon the estate of the said Carter Croxton decd. with the will aforesaid annexed, in due form; and Robt. H. P. Crabb, Thomas A. Gawen, Sampson Porter, & Edwin T. Wright are appointed Commissioners to appriase the said Estate, any three of whom may act, being first sworn.” [Westmoreland County, Virginia, Orders 1854–1860, page 355.]

On 24 October 1859, Lewis A. L. Lamkin qualified as guardian to Richard A. Croxton, William H. Croxton, and Sarah L. Croxton, orphans of Carter Croxton, deceased. James C. Croxton and Mildred A. Croxton, orphans of Carter Croxton, made choice of Lewis A. L. Lamkin as their guardian. On this same date, Lewis A. L. Lamkin submitted his accounts as adminsitrator of the estate of Carter Croxton, deceased. [Westmoreland County, Virginia, Orders 1854–60, page 421.]
