Died.—On the 20th ult. at his seat on the banks of the Rappahannock, Dr. John Brockenbrough, physician, age 60. [Richmond Enquirer, 1 December 1804, page 3.]

The will of John Brockenbrough was dated 19 November 1804. Legacy in trust to daughter Lucy Cox and her children, “so that her husband may not be able to use any power or control over the same…” Sons John, William, Thomas, Arthur, and Austin. Beloved wife Sally Brockenbrough and sons Thomas, William, Arthur and Austin to be executors. The signature as transcribed by clerk James Roy Micou says John Brockrhaigh, but elsewhere consistently spelled Brockenbrough. Witnesses: James Webb, Thomas Jamieson, Archd. McCall, Moore F. Brockinbrough. Presented in court on 18 February 1805. Sarah Brockenbrough, widow, renounced her right of executrixship; Thomas, William, Arthur and Austin Brockenbrough renounced their rights as executors. Letters of adminstration granted to Thomas Brockenbrough. [Essex County, Virginia, Will Book 16, pages 336–340.]

On 18 February 1805, Thomas Brockenbrough, Mace Clements, Sthreshley Rennolds and William Brockenbrough were bound in the penalty of $50,000 for Thomas Brockenbrough’s administration with the will annexed of John Brockenbrough. [Essex County, Virginia, Will Book 16, pages 340–341.]

On 9 August 1810, an inventory and appraisal of the estate of Doctor John Brockenbrough was made by Archibald Ritchie, Jno. Daingerfield, and John Jones. Total valuation £510.5.4, including an extensive number of books. Ordered recorded on 19 March 1811. [Essex County, Virginia, Will Book 17, pages 278–282.]

On 27 December 1810, an inventory and appraisal of the estate of Doctr. John Brockenbrough was made by Ephm: Beazley, W Fisher, and Jno. Temple. Ordered recorded on 19 March 1811. [Essex County, Virginia, Will Book 17, pages 282–283.]

The estate of Dr. John Brockenbrough, deceased, in account with Thomas Brockenbrough, administrator, from 1805 to 1812 was settled on 17 June 1812 by Laurence Muse, Benjamin Blake, and Archibald Ritchie, and ordered recorded on 17 August 1812. [Essex County, Virginia, Will Book 17, pages 391–401.]
