On 10 October 1808, Henry H. Boughan and James Allen Junr were bound for the marriage of Henry H. Boughan and Julia Wood, spinster, daughter of Sally Wood. Sally Wood gives her consent. James was mentioned in the 3 August 1810 will of his father, James Allen senior. [Essex County, Virginia, Will Book 18, pages 72–73.]

The will of James Allen jr of the County of Essex was dated 9 August 1826. To wife Amelia S Allen. To sister Susanna Latane. Friend Henry W Latane to be executor. Signed James Allen jr. Witnesses: D: J Ayres, George Hostkins, James Wright. Proved on 22 August 1826. [Essex County, Virginia, Will Book 21, page 1.]

On 22 August 1826, Henry W Latane and Austin Brockenbrough were bound in the penalty of $17,000 for Henry W Latane’s administration with the will annexed of James Allen Jr. [Essex County, Virginia, Will Book 21, pages 1–2.]

On 11 January 1827, an inventory and appraisal of the estate of James Allen, deceased, was made by Thos Wright Sr., James Wright, and John Lumpkin. Includes slaves Bacchus, Harrison, Solomon, Ben, Nelson, William, Taylor, Major, Amey and child Cresida, Jenny and child Ellen, Rose, Isabella, Delphia, Mary, Fanny, and Jessee. The estate of James Allen, deceased, in account with Henry W. Latane, administrator with the will annexed, from 1826 to 1828 was ordered recorded on 19 March 1828. Mentions travel to Lunenberg County. Income includes “To this sum allowed in settlement with Billington Dunn’s Exors amt recd by James Allen druing his life including Int thereon”. Credits include”By amt James Allens rects given to B. Dunns Exor & amt included in the rest given by the admr for the Legacy bequeathed James Allen”. On 1 February 1828, H. W. Latane, administrator of the estate of James Allen, agreed to turn over administration of the estate to Erastus T. Montague, provided H. W. Latane be held harmless.
