On 15 June 1789, William Wood witnessed a deed from Thomas and Catharine Wood to John Croxton. [Essex County, Virginia, Deed Book 33, page 204.]

On 3 May 1790, William Wood witnessed the will of James Booker. [Essex County, Virginia, Will Book 16, pages 101–102.]

On 16 May 1796, William Wood was recommended in Essex County court to the Governor of Virginia to serve as captain of the county militia. [Essex County, Virginia, Order Book 32, pages 265-266.]

On 25 November 1797, William Wood witnessed a deed from Joseph Janey and Claude Jacob of the parish of Southfarnham and County of Essex to Thomas Wood senior of the same. [Essex County, Virginia, Deed Book 34, pages 456–458.]

On 18 June 1798, Reuben Garnett and William Wood were bound $3,300 for Reuben Garnett’s executorship of the estate of Abner Ball. [Essex County, Virginia, Will Book 15, page 397.]

On 18 February 1799, Thomas and Catharine “Caty” Wood for love and affection and 10 shillings sold to their son William Wood 202 acres in South Farnham Parish. On 17 February 1800, administration of the estate of William Wood, deceased, was granted to Sally Wood. Sally Wood, Gabriel Dix, James Dix, and Lewis Dix acknowledge their bond in the penalty of $4,000. [Essex County, Virginia, Will Book 15, pages 524–525.]

On 17 February 1800, Essex County court ordered an inventory and appraisal of the estate of William Wood, which was made on 27 February 1800 by L. Booker, James Wright, and John Minter. There is no total valuation. Certified true by Sally Wood on 13 March 1800. Recorded 15 September 1800. [Essex County, Virginia, Will Book 16, pages 8–10.]

The estate of William Wood in account with Sally Wood from 1800 to 1803 was settled on 16 September 1803 by J. Bohannan, John Jones, and Carter Croxton, and recorded on 21 December 1812. [Essex County, Virginia, Will Book 17, pages 437–438.]

On 12 August 1813, in accordance with a decree of the chancery court dated 18 March 1812, an appraisal and division of the slaves and the lands of the estate of Captain William Wood were made by James Montague, Lewis Dix, James Allen and L. Booker, with a dower lot to Sally Wood, and equal lots to Henry H. Boughan (also listed as Julia Boughan’s proportion), Fountaine Wood, and James Wood. Land adjoined that of Carter Wood, Carter Croxton, Capt. Lewis Booker, John Collins, Mrs. Ann Coleman, Ambrose Hundley, and Colo. Bohannan. Several maps are included. On 21 March 1817, Gabriel Purkins deposed that the land owned (conveyed in 1799) by Catharine Dix, daughter of Thomas Wood and wife of James Dix, would be worth 40 shillings per acre. That the land conveyed by Thos Wood sr to his son Carter called Pine Top would be worth 40 shillings per acre. That Thomas Wood Sr gave to his son Carter 1/2 of a water grist mill called Dunn’s Mill, and that the mill was worth £135. The land given to his son William would be worth 40 shillings per acre, and that the land given to his son Thomas would be worth 40 shillings per acre. That the land on which a water grist mill called Germains Mill stands that was given to Thomas would be worth 45 shillings and acre; this land had been given half to Thomas and half to Joseph, and that Joseph sold his share to Thomas. The deponent knew well the slaves Phill and Sam given to Thomas’s son Thomas and that they were “house joiners and had been brought up to that trade from boyz”. Other land valuations are mentioned. On 20 November 1817, Essex County court settled a chancery suit concerning the division of the estate of Thomas Wood senior. The estate was divided between Catharine Dix, wife of James Dix, who was Catharine Wood; the heirs of William Wood; the heirs of Carter Wood; the heirs of Thomas Wood Jr.; and the heirs of Joseph Wood. The heirs of William Wood were Henry H. Boughan in right of his wife Julia, James Wood, and Fontaine Wood. The heirs of Carter Wood were William B. Matthews in right of his wife Maria G., John H. Micou in right of his wife Catharine C., and Muscoe Wood. The heirs of Thomas Wood Jr. were George Newman in right of his wife Elizabeth, Edward B. Wood, Philip B. Pendleton in right of his wife Polly, Catharine Wood, Thomas Wood, Rebecca Wood and William Wood. The heirs of Joseph Wood were Norborne Wood and Ophelia Wood.
