On 12 September 1789, Phebe Dobbins made a deposition in the case of Rachel Gordon vs Barker Minter &c.: Your deponent Phebe Dobbins, wife of Thomas Dobbins. That “William Gordon Father to her deceased Husband died in the latter End of the year 1767, at which time Peggie Gordon Wife to the said Barker Minter, was living with her Mother Elizabeth Gordon, which she did, till May 1773, when Elizabeth Gordon died…” That her former husband was Thomas Gordon. That John Gordon died four years after the death of Elizabeth Gordon. Signed Phebe her + mark Dobbins. [Essex County, Virginia, Box Chancery No. 6, item 6-E-103.]

In an undated petition, Barker Minter and Margaret his wife complained of Thomas Dobbins and Phebe his wife, which Phebe is administratrix of the estate of Thomas Gordon deceased. Thomas Gordon was an executor of William Gordon deceased. William Gordon had bequeathed to his daughter Margaret Gordon a slave named Bob. Margaret has now married Barker Minter. Thomas had loaned out the slave Bob. Barker Minter and Margaret his wife seek payment from Dobbins. Barker Minter and Margaret were married before 1784; Thomas Gordon died before October 1784. He is listed in his father’s will.

On 21 September 1795, John Minter and Barker Minter were bound £200 for Josiah Minter’s administration of the goods, chattles and credits of Rice Fawcett. Signed John Minter, Barker Minter. [Essex County, Virginia, Will Book 15, pages 157–158.]

On 14 April 1798, Rachel Fletcher declined to administer the estate of her late husband, John Fletcher. “To the Worshipful Court of Essex County as my husband John Fletcher lately died intestate and I do not wish to take upon myself admon. of his Estate if it can be committed to such person as I can confide in I now declare that I resign my right to the Same to my brother Barker Minter to whom I wish the Same to be granted. Given under my hand this 14th day of April 1798”

On 17 April 1798, administration of the esate of John Fletcher was granted to Barker Minter. Barker Minter and John Minter acknowledge their bond in the penalty of $500. [Essex County, Virginia, Will Book 15, pages 389–390.]

On 16 July 1804, Barker Minter and John Minter were bound for the marriage of Barker Minter, widower, and Sally Croxton, widower. Witnesses: John Haile junr, Robt G. Haile. [Virginia State Library, Research and Information Services Division, Essex County Marriage Bonds, Box 1, 1804–11.]

On 20 July 1807, Richard Shearwood and Barker Minter were bound for the marriage of Richard Shearwood and Mary Minter, daughter of Barker Minter. [Virginia State Library, Research and Information Services Division, Essex County Marriage Bonds, Box 1, 1804–11.]

An inventory and appraisal of the estate of Capt Thomas Wood Senr was made on 25 January 1815 by James Montague, Richd Woodward, and Barker Minter. No total valuation, but large. Recorded 15 May 1815. [Essex County, Virginia, Will Book 18, pages 162–164.]

On 17 March 1817, John Minter, Henry H. Boughan and Richard Shearwood were bound in the penalty of £4,000 for John Minter’s administration of the goods, chattles and credits of Barker Minter. [Essex County, Virginia, Will Book 18, page 366.]

On 18 May 1818, an inventory and appraisal of the estate of Barker Minter, deceased, made by James Montague, Thomas Crow, and Abraham his + mark Williamson was returned to court and ordered recorded. [Essex County, Virginia, Will Book 18, pages 481–482.]

The estate of Barker Minter, deceased, in account with John Minter, executor, from 1817 to 1821 was settled on 25 February 1821 by H W Latané, Thos. L. Latané, and Henry H Boughan. [Essex County, Virginia, Will Book 19, pages 183–184.]
